The wooded area in which the Winnie Pooh stories are set is based on the Ashdown Forest in which the original Milnes lived. The imaginary "Hundred Acre wood" is a named scene in the stories. The form of the name appear to follow that of the Five Hundred Acre Wood, which lies just outside of the Ashdown Forest, and include some of the location mentioned in the novel, such as the Enchanted Place.
